RIPE Labs published a report on independent RPKI (Resource Public Key Infrastructure) servers used to protect BGP routing on the internet. The research showed that in addition to regional internet registries (RIR), there is a network of independently managed RPKI publication servers. The report was prepared as part of an internship at SIDN Labs and analyzes the infrastructure providing cryptographic verification of routes on the internet. These servers are critical for preventing BGP-hijacking and other routing attacks. The research revealed that a significant portion of RPKI infrastructure operates on independent servers, not only on official RIR systems.
